Senior Mechanical Engineer – Switchgear Applications

Role Overview

Senior Mechanical Engineer responsible for mechanical engineering activities and technical matters associated with the design and supply of MV/LV switchgear. Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, providing mechanical design expertise, technical support, and project delivery to meet customer and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide mechanical engineering support for switchgear application projects, including project-specific mechanical design and technical solutions.

• Design and develop transformer enclosures, arc ducts, bus-duct connections, electro-mechanical layouts, termination enclosures, and non-standard cubicle/tier assemblies.

• Support the preparation of technical material requisitions for specialist sub-suppliers, including power transformers, bus-duct systems, and associated equipment.

• Create and maintain project-specific standard designs, including LV compartment layouts and cubicle/tier assemblies.

• Develop and maintain standard device inserter libraries for components such as protection relays, lamps, switches, and associated devices.

• Liaise with customers and contractors on technical matters, providing engineering support and resolving project-specific issues.

• Work closely with internal engineering, design, manufacturing, and other departments to ensure technical and project requirements are achieved.

• Ensure engineering activities meet required standards for quality, performance, customer satisfaction, and project delivery.

• Act as a technical specialist and provide engineering advice within the team.

• Support the training and development of technicians and apprentices.

• Identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement, increased efficiency, and improved engineering processes.

• Work effectively both independently and as part of a wider engineering team.

Technical Skills & Experience

• Strong mechanical engineering background with relevant industrial experience.

• Proficient in AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.

• Experience producing detailed mechanical designs and engineering layouts.

• Good understanding of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• Experience working within an engineering/manufacturing environment, typically 2–5 years or more.

• HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent engineering qualification.

• Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, contractors, and internal teams.

• Ability to understand technical requirements and deliver practical engineering solutions.

• Strong commitment to quality, customer requirements, and continuous improvement.

Desirable Experience

• Experience within a switchgear, control panel, electrical equipment, or power engineering environment.

• Degree qualification in an engineering discipline, preferably with a mechanical bias.

• Familiarity with Inventor iLogic.

• Basic understanding of electrical engineering principles and switchgear systems.

• Experience working with standardised engineering designs and component libraries.

• Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, or coaching to junior engineering staff and apprentices.
