Sports Infrastructure Design Engineer
Stadiums | Elite Sport | International Projects
West Yorkshire | Hybrid / Remote Working Considered
Ever fancied using your engineering experience on something completely different?
I'm working with an international specialist consultancy involved in the design and development of some pretty impressive sporting facilities, from professional football stadiums and elite training grounds through to major international sporting venues. They're looking to bring an experienced Design Engineer into their West Yorkshire team, someone who can help coordinate the engineering systems and infrastructure that sit behind these facilities.
And the good news? You don't need to have worked in sport before.
They're particularly interested in speaking with engineers from Civil Engineering, MEP, Building Services, drainage, water or wider infrastructure backgrounds who enjoy technical design, understand how different engineering disciplines come together and fancy applying their experience to a rather different industry.
There's a lot more to a stadium than what you see on matchday.
Take a professional football pitch, for example. Beneath the playing surface sits a network of drainage, irrigation, underground heating, ventilation, water infrastructure and specialist monitoring systems.
All of these need to work together, while also integrating with the wider stadium architecture, structures, utilities and Building Services.
That's where this role comes in.
Working alongside specialist sports consultants, engineers and BIM professionals, you'll help develop and coordinate the engineering designs that make these facilities work.
You'll be involved from the early design stages right through to detailed design and construction, working on projects that could range from elite football training facilities to major stadium developments overseas.
The work will involve developing and reviewing engineering drawings, coordinating drainage and utility layouts, resolving design interfaces and making sure the different elements of a project fit together.
You'll also get involved in technical specifications, design documentation, BIM coordination and reviewing contractor information, while working closely with architects, consultants, contractors and clients.
It's a position that offers a good balance between hands-on engineering design and wider project coordination, with the opportunity to take increasing ownership of the technical delivery as you develop.
Who are they looking for?
The consultancy is open-minded about your engineering background. They're not expecting to find somebody who already knows everything about sports infrastructure, but they do need somebody who understands engineering design and can work confidently across different disciplines.
You might currently be working as a Civil Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, MEP Design Engineer, Building Services Engineer or within a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy.
Ideally, you'll have around five years or more of relevant experience and be comfortable working with technical drawings, design documentation and engineering coordination.
Knowledge of drainage, pipework, utilities, levels, plant or associated infrastructure would be particularly useful, although you certainly don't need experience across all of these areas.
Experience with AutoCAD or Revit would be beneficial, with Civil 3D, Navisworks and BIM coordination experience also welcomed.
Above all, you'll need to be technically capable, comfortable communicating with other engineering disciplines and happy taking responsibility for design work.
A relevant degree, HNC/HND or equivalent professional experience would be suitable. Chartership would be welcomed but isn't essential.
A completely new engineering specialism.
One of the biggest attractions here is the opportunity to develop expertise in an industry that relatively few engineers get the chance to work in.
You'll be working alongside people who specialise in the technical requirements of elite sporting surfaces, learning about everything from pitch drainage and irrigation through to undersoil heating, ventilation, hybrid turf systems and the standards associated with organisations such as FIFA, UEFA and World Athletics.
The specialist sports knowledge can be taught. What they're looking for is somebody who brings the engineering design experience and understands how to turn complex technical requirements into practical, coordinated solutions.
Over time, you'll become involved in increasingly complex projects, developing a specialist skill set while continuing to build on your existing engineering experience.
And what makes it worth a move?
Aside from the obvious attraction of working on major sporting venues, you'll be joining an established international consultancy with a genuinely unusual project portfolio.
There's the opportunity to work on UK and overseas schemes, collaborate with specialists from different engineering disciplines and develop your career in a sector that offers something quite different from traditional consultancy work.
The position is connected to their West Yorkshire team, with hybrid working available and remote arrangements potentially considered depending on experience.
The wider package includes pension, health cash plan, life insurance, wellbeing support, discounted gym membership, enhanced maternity and paternity leave, sick pay and continued professional development.
And while you certainly don't need to be a football fan, there's something quite appealing about watching a match at a major stadium knowing you've helped engineer what's happening beneath the pitch.
If you're an experienced Design Engineer from a Civil, MEP, Building Services or infrastructure background and fancy taking your career in a different direction, I'd be interested in speaking with you.
