At the Science Museum Group, our Curatorial team is committed to ensuring our unique collections remain accessible, supporting their development and promoting engagement with our diverse audiences, colleagues and everyone who encounters them.
We are now looking for a Research Associate to join our team at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, working part-time - 21 hours per week, on a fixed-term contract for 12 months.
About the role
As Research Associate on the AHRC funded project 'Communities & Crowds: Expanding Volunteer Programs Across Physical and Digital Spaces for Cultural Institutions', you will be part of the project management team exploring the relationship between in persona and online volunteering. As a Co-Investigator on the project, you will help lead the direction of the research, supervise and lead the volunteers, and deliver the project outcomes.
In this role, you will work with the curatorial team at the National Science and Media Museum (NSMM) to support a group of volunteers to create a new digitization pipeline of the Daily Herald Archive as well as developing a delivering a new citizen science platform on Zooniverse.org. You will bring a participatory approach to working with our audiences and our collections and carry out research on the efficacy of this approach.
Joining us you will have PhD level experience in researching participatory approaches in museums, with additional experience of delivering presentations and talks. You will have an awareness of best practice in collection management, including documentation, acquisition, dispersals and loans.
You will possess knowledge and enthusiasm for the museum's collection of image and sound technologies and archives, alongside the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively to a non-specialist audience.
